2003 nas server in domain renames my home folders to "user.name" Stand alone to "documents"
I am in a domain environment 2003 nas server. User’s computers are a mix of a couple of XP and Vista and then 70 or so Win 7 About 6 months ago we found that there were 4 folders named the same D:\homefolders\user.name on the nas server. Everyone had access to their respective folders so the OS was treating them right as individual users with permissions. The first user had vista after reinstalling this machine to win 7 we renamed one of the four to the actual user.name. Now instead of 4 we have 12 folders named after another user that wasn't even affected before we renamed the user’s home folder. I am hesitating to do anything because everything is being handled ok..... It’s just that when you log on to the server and look at the data drive there are 12 home folders named the same user.name although they are actually individual users with permissions. Now I got some other file servers in external offices that have 2003, 2008 R2 and 2008 standard server on them and they are doing kind of same thing. Their folders are not renamed “user.name” but just “documents” They are outside of the domain the server is joined as a standalone server with the user accounts on them. The user’s computers are not joined to the domain in the field offices. There file server is backed up to a DPM server here at HQ. They do have email accounts on the exchange server so they do have their domain account on the file server. I noticed that any home folder that is used is now named simply "documents" and not user.name that was originally set up with I have a couple of users that don't access their home folders and it is the original user.name. When I did a search I found that a lot of people are talking about editing the desktop.ini I don't know if thats the answer either it doesn't seem right. I have a server from an external office that is closing in August that I can play with so I am going to try to fix it first. It has 2008 standard on it. I think this is a Vista/win 7 issue I hope I have explained this ok the problem spans over a period of time maybe a year or more from when we were running a few vista machines before we went to win 7 Any ideas would be helpful Thanks
